How to Measure Your Head
To ensure your customers get the right size the first time (and to save you from processing returns), it’s helpful to explain how they should measure.
-
Circumference: Trace the hairline all the way around the head and nape of the neck.
-
Front to Nape: Measure from the center of the front hairline, over the crown, down to the nape of the neck.
-
Ear to Ear: Measure from the hairline directly above one ear, across the top of the head, to the hairline above the other ear.
-
South African Context: Most South African women find that a Medium cap fits best, but if they have a lot of natural hair (like a thick afro or long braids) to tuck underneath, suggest they size up to a Large.
-
Adjustable Straps: Mention in your product descriptions that most of your wigs come with adjustable straps and combs, which allow for about a 1 cm to 2 cm margin of error.
-
Visual Aids: Use the table above as a "Size Guide" image or a popup on your product pages. Shopify has several free "Size Chart" apps that can help you integrate this cleanly.
Choosing the right size ensures your wig stays secure, comfortable, and looks natural. Most adults fall into the Average category, but measuring is the only way to be sure.
| Size | Head Circumference | Best Fit For |
| Ultra Petite | 19" – 20" | Children or very small head shapes |
| Petite | 20" – 21" | Smaller adult frames |
| Petite/Average | 21" – 21.5" | Between small and medium |
| Average | 21.5" – 22.5" | Standard size (fits 90% of customers) |
| Large | 22.5" – 23.5" | Larger head shapes or thick natural hair |
How to Measure Your Head
To get an accurate measurement, make sure your natural hair is as flat as possible (braided down or in a wig cap). Use a soft cloth measuring tape.
-
Circumference: Start at the front of your hairline, wrap the tape behind your ear, around the nape of your neck, up behind the other ear, and back to the front.
-
Front to Back: Measure from your front hairline, over the crown of your head, down to the nape of your neck.
-
Ear to Ear: Measure from the hairline above one ear, across the top of your head, to the hairline above the other ear.
Pro Tips for Your Customers
-
Adjustable Straps: Remind customers that most of your wigs come with internal adjustable straps that can tighten or loosen the cap by up to 0.5 inches.
-
When in Doubt, Size Up: If they are between sizes, it is usually better to go with the larger size. A wig that is too tight can cause headaches, while a slightly loose wig can be secured with a wig grip or clips.
-
Natural Hair Volume: If the customer has very thick or long natural hair that they plan to tuck under the wig, they may need to go up one size to accommodate the extra bulk.
